English Language Arts

Unit 1: Story Time

This unit emphasizes strategies and skills used in reading and responding to a variety of texts, including concepts about prints and how books work. A wide variety of grade-level appropriate literature is used to introduce story elements. This includes read-alouds, shared reading and writing, and partner and independent reading of decodable texts.

Unit 2: Put On Your Thinking Cap

This unit focuses on critical thinking skills using a wide variety of grade-appropriate texts during shared reading. An additional focus includes the different purposes for which author’s write (to entertain, to inform, or to describe.)

Unit 3: Let’s Read – Poems, Fairy Tales, Fables

This unit focuses on reading, responding to, and identifying the characteristics of poems, fables, and fairy tales. Word play (rhyming) is included to increase oral and written language fluency and to help with decoding words.

Unit 4: The Information Hunt

This unit focuses on locating factual information using a variety of sources such as nonfiction books, computers, and magazines. These activities may be used in conjunction with science or social studies units or on topics of choice. Information learned will be recorded on cards and in student-created books.

Unit 5: Words in a Fun Way – Poetry

This unit provides students with various forms of poetry to listen to, read, and interpret. The unit will focus on reading and interpreting meaning in poetry selections and exploring a variety of poetic forms through writing activities. Poetry should be used throughout the year.

Unit 6: Discovering is Exciting – Reading/Writing Nonfiction

This unit’s focus is reading and writing informational texts to learn about various topics. High interest multimedia materials will provide opportunities to show how information is organized. The activities should be used throughout the year in conjunction with science and social studies.

Unit 7: How to Learn About People – Autobiographies/Biographies

This unit focuses on reading and writing biography and autobiography. Comparisons and contrasts of biographies of interesting people written long ago, as well as more recent works, will be explored.

Unit 8: Creative Writing/Creative Drama

This unit focuses on oral and written communication and listening skills. Creative writing skills will be further developed. Drama will be used to enhance students’ understanding of stories.
