This unit emphasizes strategies and skills used in reading and responding to
a variety of texts, including concepts about prints and how books work. A wide
variety of grade-level appropriate literature is used to introduce story elements.
This includes read-alouds, shared reading and writing, and partner and independent
reading of decodable texts.

texts during shared reading. An additional focus includes the different purposes
for which author’s write (to entertain, to inform, or to describe.)
